Day 1: What Do We Know About Weather?
Objective:
Students will
Materials:
Computer with internet access (link to Weather Song)
Chart paper or Chalk/White Board
Chalk or markers
"Oh Say, Can You Say, What's the Weather Today?" book
Clip boards
Cloud Observation worksheet
Instruction:
Gather the students in a group and begin the unit by asking them what they already know about weather. Write a bubble on the board with the word "WEATHER" written in it. Make a concept map for weather by following the example below. Have students give you examples of weather that they are already familiar with and attach those words to the concept map. Ask students if they think weather is predictable? Ask them how they knew what to put on today (If it's winter weather, did anyone wear shorts? If it's warm weather, did anyone wear a heavy coat?) What information did they already have about the area in which we live and the current weather season? Does this information help them to plan their days/activities?
Students will
- observe and describe seasonal weather patterns.
- observe and record daily weather conditions, such as sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, or snowy.

Next have the students listen to the weather song. Ask if they heard any additional terms to put on the weather concept map. Add the words as you go
through the lesson.
Read "Oh You Say, Can You Say, What's the Weather Today" to the class to introduce the unit to the students. Explain that you will be learning about how weather patterns form and about what causes certain weather (storms) to occur. Let them know that over the next 2 weeks you will be studying and predicting the weather.
Hand each student a Cloud Observation worksheet. Have students glue or tape the worksheet into the right side of the next available page in their interactive science notebooks. Explain that you will be going outside each day (as weather permits) to observe the clouds and record your findings on the worksheet. Lead students outside and fill out the "First Observation" on the worksheet together.
Assessment:
Teacher will listen for correct weather-related answers during the making of the concept map and look for accurate drawings and recording on the Cloud worksheet during outdoor weather observations.
